Florida: Alpha Phase Exersice Band Animations

The Project

In the winter of 2013, long before the release of the appled watch, I asked to imagine the interface and interactions for an excercise-life-style-band in the early alpha stages of design and development.

The startup team, backed by one of the biggest names in Silicon Valley, asked the design firm Lunar to design a number of experimental interfaces while the engineering team worked on the hardware.

In concept the band would track heart-rate, detect excerise of various types, calories burned, calm states like meditation seperate from resting, and sleep patterns. At the time tracking heart-rate was novel and compelling, and formed the core driving feature of the divice. These four states were refered to as: heart-reate, activity, calm, sleep, and calories.

Structuring the Experiments

Each weak my team met with the Florida team and collectively choose a section of the device experience to focus on. These sprints were intentially setup as agile fluid steps. At the end of the week, the results were shown, discussed, and new directions planned. The process proved extreemly powerful for generating interesting results, and for finding problems faster than traditional planned process.

Product Limitations

The product had two major limiting factors in its design. First, the screen size was not bigger than a thumbnail. And two, the screen would only be able to display black and white, no gray. This means simple things like rounded corners look jagged because the illustion of rounded corners is created by using lighter shades of color.

However, the screen had a good refresh rate, and touch senstivity.

Taking these points into consideration, I looked for ways to make the weaknesss charming, and strengths robust.

Animation Exploring Activity

Tracking wearer's activity should be rewarding. A good fitness band should give a user positive feedback and a feeling of excitement when checking their status.
